In keeping with its annual tradition, the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO), together with the WEWIS department one of the Alamire Foundation's most important research funders, launched a countdown calendar to the new year.

Under the title 20 of 25, the organization shares one photo each day of the most striking research moments of the past year. They kicked off with an image that highlights the interdisciplinary work of the Alamire Foundation: a snapshot of the acoustic measurements in the Royal Monastery of Brou in Bourg-en-Bresse, a monastery complex built on the orders of Margaret of Austria. The measurements, which were led by project coordinator for ESAT, Toon van Waterschoot, were carried out as part of the FWO Strategic Basic Research project New Perspectives on Medieval and Renaissance Courtly Song. The initial results of this acoustic research were integrated into the XR media installation rondeau / forty-nine* set up at the museum M Leuven. During ‘Museum Night’ on 26 November, the installation was presented in detail to a wide-ranging, young audience. The successful installation can still be viewed until 22 February, 2026.

Our team will soon be acoustically measuring other historical spaces where courtly songs from the Middle Ages and Renaissance were sung, such as the studioli of Federico da Montefeltro in Urbino, Italy, and of Isabella d'Este in Mantua.

The photo and countdown calendar can be found on the Instagram page of FWO Flanders. The website of the Royal Monastery of Brou can be found here. Well worth a visit!
