The CD recording "Ni Dufay, Ni Binchois: The Works of Johannes Pullois" by the vocal-instrumental Sollazzo Ensemble has just been awarded a prestigious Diapason d’Or.
The album is the latest addition to the Alamire Foundation Editions series in collaboration with the Passacaille label. Under the artistic direction of Anna Danilevskaia, the musicians immersed themselves in the oeuvre of the little known fifteenth-century composer Johannes Pullois. The ensemble began exploring his work while putting together a new concert program for Laus Polyphoniae 2023, which was entirely devoted to music from fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Antwerp. Research into Pullois' life and work has rightly witnessed a revival in recent years. He enjoyed a rich career that took him from Antwerp to Rome and back again, an indication that the Franco-Flemish composer was every bit as talented as his more illustrious contemporaries such as Ockeghem and Busnoys. He composed in the most important genres of his time and analysis of his repertoire shows that he had an innovative view of the compositional practice of the day. The recording by the Sollazzo Ensemble restores this neglected figure to his rightful place in the musical history of the Low Countries. The award of a Diapason d'Or promises to be a boost for the further spread of lesser known works from the musical heritage from the Low Countries, an endeavour that is one of the central pillars of the Alamire Foundation.
The CD is available via the Passacaille webshop. You can attend a live concert by the Sollazzo Ensemble during the upcoming edition of Laus Polyphoniae on August 29 in Antwerp, featuring works by pioneers such as Matteo da Perugia and Zacara da Teramo. Buy your tickets now on the AMUZ website.
