Leuven Chansonnier

Polyphony
October 2024 - September 2028

The polyphonic songs as transmitted in the Leuven Chansonnier are part of our European heritage that can be considered being on the same artistic level as the paintings of the Flemish Primitives. After concluding the first doctoral research project on this precious manuscript—not much bigger than an iPhone—earlier this year, the Alamire Foundation will start a new four-year Strategic Basic Research on 1 October: New Perspectives on Medieval and Renaissance Courtly Song, funded by the FWO. The Alamire Foundation will partner with Leiden University, Antwerp University, and KU Leuven in further pursuing multidisciplinary research on Franco-Flemish chansonniers found in locations worldwide. Central to the research project are a focus on the performance practice, the broader musical, literary, and cultural context, as well as the use of innovative technologies in the research on acoustics and architecture.
