On the art of counterpoint

Polyphony
November 2019 - November 2025

The artistic research will focus on how to revive the Renaissance practice of improvised counterpoint. Based on a close study of ms. Paris, BnF, Esp. 219, allegedly written by Vicente Lusitano ca. 1550, this work will examine the numerous Renaissance counterpoint techniques documented in this source, with the aim of including as many of them among skills as a performer. A research rooted in practice will help to achieve the main key objectives of this project: both to further refine practical abilities in order to present artistic output in the form of CD recordings featuring improvised counterpoint and to bring the results of this research to the concert hall and modern audiences at the highest possible artistic level.
