Last month, the first print run of 'Madrigal Collections from the Low Countries in Central Europe', the most recent volume in the Leuven Library of Music in Facsimile series, rolled off the presses.

The study examines a collection of partbooks containing Italian madrigals, printed in Antwerp in the 1590s (University of Warsaw Library, SDM 8–36), offering insight into a key moment in the reception of the genre north of the Alps.

Moreover, the collection’s historical binding reveals the identity of its early users shortly after publication: a professor, four students, and an alumnus of the Viadrina University in Frankfurt an der Oder. In this way, the collection sheds light on an unexpected facet of musical culture at a Central European university around 1600.

The hardcover volume, edited by Antonio Chemotti (KU Leuven, Alamire Foundation), with David Burn and Bart Demuyt as General Editors, is now available in our webshop. The volume can also be consulted digitally via the publication platform of the Integrated Database for Early Music.
